Sacagawea Dollar Coin Specifications
The Sacagawea Dollar was issued from 2000 to 2008. Featured on the obverse of the coin is a portrait of Sacagawea designed by Glenna Goodacre, while the reverse carries the image of an eagle in flight designed by Thomas D. Rodgers. The obverse design continued in use for the following Native American Dollar series.
The coins would introduce a new type of composition, created specifically for the denomination. The mixture of metals would create a distinctive golden color to help easily identify the coins in circulation. The net composition consisted of 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel.
Sacagawea Dollars would only be produced for circulation during 2000 and 2001. After that date, the coins continued to be produced in business strike format, but these were sold directly to collectors at a premium to face value. For each year of the series from 2000 to 2008, the San Francisco Mint struck proof versions of the coins. From 2005 to 2008, the Philadelphia and Denver Mint struck satin finish versions.
